Career-related learning
At Valley Invicta Primary School at Aylesford, career-related learning helps pupils begin to understand the wide range of opportunities available to them in the future. From an early age, we aim to broaden pupils’ horizons and raise aspirations by helping them explore the world of work and recognise the importance of the knowledge and skills they develop at school.
Our approach encourages pupils to believe in their potential and to understand that opportunities are open to everyone, regardless of their gender, ethnicity or background. By introducing pupils to a variety of careers, role models and experiences, we help them see that there are many different pathways they may choose to follow.
Career-related learning is woven through our wider curriculum and personal development opportunities. Pupils are encouraged to recognise their own strengths, interests and talents, and to understand how the skills they are developing at school can support their future ambitions.
Through these experiences, pupils begin to:
- Develop curiosity about the world of work
- Understand how different subjects link to future careers and opportunities
- Challenge stereotypes and recognise that anyone can pursue a wide range of careers
- Build confidence in their own abilities and aspirations
- Develop important skills such as communication, teamwork and problem-solving
By introducing pupils to different careers, industries and experiences, we help them to see how education can support them in achieving their goals and preparing for the future.
How Career-Related Learning is Developed
Career-related learning develops progressively throughout a pupil’s time at school. In the Early Years and Key Stage 1, pupils begin by exploring their interests, learning about different jobs and understanding how people contribute to their communities.
As pupils move through Key Stage 2, they deepen their understanding of the wider world of work. They learn how different subjects connect to careers, meet visitors from a range of professions, and explore how skills such as teamwork, communication and problem-solving are valued in many different roles.
These experiences help pupils to recognise their strengths and develop confidence in their ambitions for the future.
Inspiring Role Models
Learning about inspiring individuals from a wide range of backgrounds helps pupils understand that people from all walks of life can achieve success and make a difference in the world.
Resources such as the BBC short films on careers introduce pupils to a variety of professions and the skills required for different roles. Books such as Little People, Big Dreams, Little Leaders and Young, Gifted and Black by Jamia Wilson (not sure if we still use this text but was on the website) highlight influential individuals, whose achievements can inspire young people to pursue their ambitions.
